Are You A Slave To The Mundane?
Are You A Slave To The Mundane?
I run a lot of programs, on-line and off-line. Most people sign up with the best of intentions, they are going to attend every week and really learn to write or paint or whatever else the program is about.
Sometimes even though they are enjoying the program, they confide in me that they need to bow out because something in their everyday life needs more attention. It’s never because they just won a trip to Borneo.
And I usually get great reviews even from those students who had to leave early.
So, they are getting goodies out of attending but something pulls them away from this new thing they looked forward to.
What is happening here?
The call of the mundane boots out the call for the new and different. Most of the time, it is fear whispering for them to get away from that new, different thing and come back to the safety of the known. Come back to Mama Fear and be a good little girl/boy. Don’t ever grow up and do your own thing. That isn’t good for the flock …
Humans are trained to want to feel safe, even if the safety harness snuffs out events that would make them feel energized and powerful.
One time I almost talked myself out of attending a Continuing Ed advanced logo design program. It was in Boston. Too far, I said. Too inconvenient, I said. Too many tolls on the pike, I said.
An inner strength reared its beautiful head and willed me to go.
Not some big fancy program. Just a graphic designer making some extra cash. But he wasn’t an ordinary designer. He shared all his graphic design gifts, which he gathered after doing hundreds of logos. His gifts made me a superior designer. And I met some fabulous women in the class who I became friends with and we critiqued each other’s designs for years. We all worked together to create designs that went beyond the cliche.
I shutter to think that I almost talked myself out of that program, I would not have the logo design chops I have now if I succumbed to my own fears.
The mundane will be here day in and day out. The special events in our lives can be fleeting and brief, but leave you with an inspirational message or uplifting mindset or the courage to live the life you have imagined.
Perhaps, become more aware of how you try to talk yourself out of things and how the pull of the everyday can be nothing more than fear seducing you away from a new idea that might change you in a profound way.
