The Year of Creating Dangerously

March 5, 2014 by Giulietta Nardone

I’ve thrown creative caution to the wind. Been going all out in 2014 and am just two months into it.

Singing:

A few weeks ago, I sang Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” For so long I thought, I can’t sing Whitney Houston. Then in December I heard Tessanne Chin win The Voice with it and I thought, “I’m going to try it.” Well, it came out terrific. A woman sitting near me said “It gave her the chills.” I used to be terrified of singing Whitney, now I consider it my best song. If The Voice auditions somewhere in New England or NYC, then I vow to try out for it.

We can do way more than we think we can.

Writing:

Working on a couple of lyric essays. These essays are more offbeat, structured differently. For example, you might divide the essays into different cars you owned and what happened in and around those cars. Or split the essay into a three-part symphony. Kinda like experimental art, except it’s experimental writing. I’m sending out more essays to more places. I had gotten into a rut trying to get published in one place. Then I thought, I need to let go of this and submit to all these other terrific places. The more you send out, the more likely you will get published.

Plays:

Finished my first mini-one woman play. A ten-minute play. Will write more and string them together. I LOVED Spaulding Grey and went to many of his one-man shows. Monster-in-the-box had me crying and laughing at what seemed to be the right time. Golly, that was eons ago and I just got myself off my duff to do this! It feels wonderful to have cranked this out.

Creating:

I’m creating new classes for women, for teens, for college students. Years ago, I taught sociology/anthropology at a Boston area college and decided this month to put something cool together. I would sign up for these classes in a minute! Wish me luck sending them out.

Painting/Drawing:

I took a pastel drawing class in the fall. But that’s been it for a good year. I got away from it when they demolished the parking garage at the Danforth Museum and I found it hard to park. But I’m looking at some other options. There is a watercolor woman I want to study with at some local art centers. Her stuff is gorgeous, all drippy and disobedient. I  switched to watercolor because the oil products were drying my eyes out. It got to the point where I could not open my eyes in the morning! I find I can create an oilish look by doing offbeat things with the watercolor. Easy clean up, too.

I’m pumped up just highlighting The Year of Creating Dangerously!

How about you? What is this your year of? Please share below …

Thanks, G.
